Q: Why do the fish come to shore at Aquascene?
The tradition of hand-feeding fish at Doctors Gully was started by renowned diver Carl Atkinson in 1958, who began throwing bread scraps to fish he spotted in the water. Over the decades, generations of fish have learned to come to the shore at high tide to be fed. The site was declared an official marine sanctuary in 1964, protecting the fish and their habitat.
Q: Are the fish wild?
Yes — all the fish at Aquascene are completely wild. They are not kept in tanks or enclosures. They freely come and go with the tides and choose to visit the shore to feed. This makes the experience entirely natural and unique.
Q: Can you touch or hold the fish?
The fish will naturally swim around and over your feet and hands during feeding. While they are not pets, the interaction is very close and personal. Aquascene is a protected marine sanctuary so the fish and their environment must be treated with care and respect.
